there is no such thing as the "average" cancer patient. And cost of treatment is never average either, there are far too many variables involved to be able to average such things.

Honey, No cancer patient is average. We all have different types of cancer and treatments and medications are so widely varied that it's impossible to try and answer this question. Just know this. It ain't cheap, lol ADD Wow, I just saw the RN's answer above mine. It's amazing how much alike they are. Guess we think alike because of our fields and years of experience. How long have you been an RN Essentia? Curious. ADD To Lo-mcg. I just want to respond to your question. The people are not really the ones who want to stop universal health care, it's the Doctors and all those in medical professions including nurses. Here's what my MD said. "If that comes in, we can't charge the rates we do now. The Gov will dictate how much I can make and I can't charge anymore than that. Same for the hospitals. They charge a certain amount for each test. If we get the new proposal, the Gov will also dictate how much we can charge for that. Then the technitions, nurses, some Dr. and any involved with the hospital, will all have to take pay cuts" I stopped him right about there. He would have gone on forever. That's all thier main concerns. Pay cuts, cut backs on staffing. So much is involved in this and I believe we will have this one day, but I think it's far in the furture. Right now, we have to pay these horrible amounts of money for one prescription, and an outrageous amount of money as a co-pay before a proceedure in the hospital. It's alwful, just awful greed on the part of everyone trying to stop this. I want it in. Sorry, I better stop now too.

Where I come from, cancer patients pay nothing at all for their treatment. I find it chilling that medical treatment can depend on ability to pay. Why there is such strong opposition to universal health care in America I have no idea

Patients in developed countries (excluding the USA) pay nothing or very little because they have government-managed health services with universal access. Patients in the USA may pay enormous amounts of money or nothing, depending on whether they have any health insurance and how good the insurance is. Approximately 50 million Americans have no insurance and they struggle terribly to find the money to stay alive. Patients in developing countries pay much lower rates than in the USA for the same level of service. That's why many uninsured American stravel overseas for major medical procedures.

You are presumably asking about the US. I live in a country with universal hospital and doctor care. I spend about $500 pa on meds, and a few dollars on transportation to appointments.

We had health insurance that covered our sons total medical bill . . which was somewhere over a million dollars. The costs that you do not see, however, are lodging, meals, travel, and loss of income from a job . . it isn't just paying the hospital . . but HOW do you pay for treatment if you cannot hold a job because you are too ill . . and if you lose your job, you lose your health insurance .. we were fortunate to have our own business and a good health insurance policy. But I see this play out with other cancer patients on a regular basis . . . mostly because these are young adults, some with young families to support . . and they lose everything . . their jobs, their insurance, their homes, their savings, and their lives . . and after they die . . their young families are responsible for enormous medical bills and funeral costs as well. Cancer sucks.
