I don't know a lot about this but I know that chemo is her best shot if she doesn't do that then she could get her whole colon taken out before the cancer spreads. Do you know for how long she has had the cancer? You could always ask the doctors. The doctors won't do anything unnecessary and they really do want to help. The best person you could ask is the doctor. He went to school for this.

You are experiencing one of the hardest things to experience besides the cancer itself. Having the person you love in the entire world suffering with cancer and then added to that having problems with treatment. It is imperative to discuss this not with us, because we are not doctors (most of us are not anyway) and not familiar with her case if we were doctors. I would do whatever her oncologist recommended because he is the best chance of her surviving the disease. So, ask them and that is my final answer and the best one too.

To a person going through chemo food taste and smells different. Almost every day. The most important thing is to take the anti nausea pill on time, before I get nauseated. Once the vomiting starts it is harder to stop. The oncologist said to eat what ever I want and I do. It may not sound healthy, but it tastes good, to me, and I don't lose much weight. That seems to be a goal. Keep the portions very, very small. Bland foods like an egg and a piece of fruit are good sometimes. Othertimes a very spicy food is good. But seldom is fried meat good. Try to keep cooking odors out if you can. Old favorite foods don't taste good any more. And sometimes I have a handfull of gumdrops for breakfast and a popcycle for lunch! So what ever she will eat, whenever she will eat it is best. Just make sure to take the anti nausea pill before she starts vomiting, and remember odors can cause nausea too. As for treatment, stick with what the oncologist recommends. Try to remember each person reacts differently even though they may be on the exact same treatment. So try not to compare her with others. Do ask the oncologist lots of questions and don't stop asking questions until you understand the answers. If you notice something that may be helpful, tell the doctor, if you want a different, or more, test, or question a different drug, ask the doctor. Don't give any thing (asprin, vitamen, nothing) without asking the doctor first. Your oncologist is your best source of information, and there is no proof that alternative treatments work. I do wish both of you the very best.

I understand your desperation; but you have to understand that in this context 'alternative' is just another word for 'unproven'. If a treatment has been proven in proper clinical trials to be effective, then it is no longer 'alternative medicine' - it is just 'medicine'. The 'alternatives' you mention have not been proven effective against any cancer, ever. Chemotherapy isn't perfect, far from it. I believe that one day people will look back on it with horror in the same way we look back on blood letting. But for now it is the best we have; and we know, because it has been tested and proven in double-blind clinical trials, that it saves many lives and prolongs many, many more. You've heard chemo kills? Chemo isn't always effective. But in those cases it is the cancer, not the treatment, that kills the patient - they have died in spite of treatment, not because of it. Distressed relatives sometimes look for something or someone to blame, and some conclude that it was the treatment that killed the person. With some types of chemotherapy, and in some cancers, there is a very slightly increased chance of developing a second type of cancer later. Generally this is more likely to happen when the original cancer was a lymphoma, but it can happen very occasionally with other types of cancer. Fortunately this very serious long-term effect is VERY RARE. But yes it happens, and yes very occasionally someone dies as a result. People with aggressive and advanced cancers who agree to chemotherapy do so in the full knowledge of these facts because they have a life-threatening disease and this is their best chance. The window of opportunity for effective chemotherapy is limited. Your loved one should consider whether she wants to lose that time experimenting with treatments that have not been clinically tested and proven. She and you should think very carefully before investing money, hope or (most precious of all for a cancer patient) time on ineffective and sometimes dangerous 'alternatives'. Do a search on this site for information if she is tempted by any particular 'alternative': http://www.quackwatch.org/ In particular check out the particular alternatives you mention: Cesium and Ph therapy: http://www.quackwatch.org/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/DSH/coral.html Protocell: http://www.quackwatch.org/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/cancer.html (scroll down to CanCell, one of the many names its producers have peddled it under in its infamous history). She should talk to her oncologist about any alternative treatment she intends to take alongside chemotherapy.
